tower house
For this project, our client requested two structures: a bold addition to their house, as well as a separate observation tower for viewing the surrounding Hill Country.
The client’s spartan budget prompted us to ask, Why couldn’t the project be both an addition that incorporates the program and a tower that provides multiple views of the hills? The resulting architecture yields carefully aimed viewports located for each member of the family.
The tower is entered via a “bridge,” which provides a spatially compressed transition from the original house. Ascending the sculptural stair, the volume explodes into an expansive living space which leads to the two-story volume of the screened porch. The height is not only dramatic, but it serves to stratify hot, humid air—keeping the porch pleasant on the hottest of days. The architectural experience climaxes upon ascension to the cantilevered observation “diving board”—allowing an immersive plunge into the Hill Country view.
Sustainable Design
Combining the observation tower with the addition protected the surrounding live-oak trees from damage and reduced impervious coverage. Rainwater is harvested for all domestic water use. The limited palette of recyclable steel and renewable wood is resource-wise and fiscally prudent. Right-sized, recessed fenestration, polarizing screens on western exposures, and white membrane roofing work together to reduce solar heat gain. Strategically located fans and tall spaces stratify hot air to reduce the need for air conditioning. However, when needed, the VRF AC system efficiently locates conditioned air only where required. The irresistible, sculptural stair encourages active movement.
